Shutter Hub is a UK-based photography organisation providing opportunities, support and networking for creative photographers worldwide. We have around 1000 members and are regularly invited to partner with major organisations such as the London Art Fair, Format Photography Festival, World Photography Association and Foam Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam.
As part of London Photomonth 7 October – 1 November 2016 we held an exibition, Girl Town, celebrating the culture of the female in the 21st century, curated by Shutter Hub and the Old Girls Club and exhibited at St Margaret’s House in Bethnal Green.
Girl Town came together through an open call promoted by Shutter Hub and The Old Girls Club, which invited participants to enter up to 5 images via Instagram using the hashtag #girltownPM and the images were captured and printed directly from Instagram, with support from Metro Imaging. Using social media in this way created opportunities for a wide range of photographers with varied practices to get involved (at no cost to them at all) and resulted in a diverse and challenging display.
The exhibition was hugely popular and very well received by thousands of viewers, and the acclaimed Whitechapel gallery featured it in their top 5 exhibitions to see that month. A series of talks, discussions and screenings were held throughout the duration of the exhibition and included speakers from The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Photovoice and the Director of Photomonth East London.
We have been invited to show the "Girl Town"'exhibition at Alfred Gallery in Tel Aviv for 1 month from 14 October, which is a fantastic opportunity for all the photographers involved as well as creating an exciting and important ongoing cultural exchange.
Our intention is for members of the Shutter Hub team (3 of us, all volunteering, all females working in the photographic industry) to travel to Tel Aviv to install and launch the exhibition and document our experiences, for which we have had interest from national and international press.
Metro Imaging are generously providing prints of the images for display, but we are looking for support to cover travel, accommodation and basic supplies for the volunteers facilitating the exhibition installation and events in Tel Aviv.
We are asking for £2000 or whatever we can raise to contribute towards covering these costs.
Complete financial breakdown, based on 3 volunteers :
- Travel - flights: £1950
- Travel - transfers etc.: £300
- Air B&B: £600
- Basic groceries: £120
- Flyers/invites: £140
- Exhibition sundries: £80
- Private view: £250
If there are any additional funds after covering all essential costs we will put them towards further promotional materials for the exhibition and extending the reach of the project and discussion.
Everyone who has contributed and donated will be thanked on the Shutter Hub blog and on a printed list of supporters which will be displayed with the exhibition - please let us know if you would prefer to remain anonymous.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our project - we do hope you might consider supporting us in this opportunity and would be grateful if you could share our campaign!
